But now you’ve committed yourself, and you need to get supplies? And you don’t want to blow an even bigger hole through your budget, now that the bacchanal of the holidays has passed?
Well my friend, you’ve come to the right blog.
Tip For Tomorrow: Finally, I will share with you cheap and easy New Year’s Resolutions you can make today, that will save you money tomorrow and throughout the year. I know, it’s ABOUT FRIGGIN’ TIME.
Further Elucidation Of My Cheap Deal: I don’t do home repair. I’m lucky if I change my furnace filter twice a year, and I’ve actually hired a plumber to replace my shower head. However, I know there are thrifty Chicks and Dudes out there that read this blog and want tips on home remodeling stuff.
Far be it from me to deny you what you need. So here you go – three stores in the Twin Cities that will hook you up with building supplies without destroying what’s left of your bank account. Enjoy, and let it be said that I Am A Giver:
1. The ReUse Center, with locations in Minneapolis and Maplewood. Their goal is to reduce solid waste and improve the environment by selling salvaged, new and surplus building materials that would have otherwise ended up in landfills.
The Reuse Center carries everything you need, like doors, windows, cabinets, plumbing fixtures, flooring, hardware – you name it, they’ve got it, and at hugely discounted prices. How low are their prices you ask? Each year, they save their customers $2 million on supplies.
2. The Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore in Minneapolis. They sell new and like-new building materials at very low prices. Their mission is to generate revenue to fund Habitat homes, to provide low cost building materials to the public, to keep usable materials out of landfills, and to increase the breadth of donations Habitat is able to accept – thus sayeth their website.

3. Building Material Outlet Midwest in Eagan (formerly Cannon Recovery) – the Handyman’s Candy Store. And no, I am NOT making up that tagline. They’re a family-owned business that’s been liquidating building materials for over 40 years.
Stop by their huge warehouse and you’ll find over 110,000 square feet of doors, windows, lumber, cabinets, flooring – everything you need at a third or more off retail prices.

Question Of The Day: What home project do you have planned for 2009? I hope to paint my bedroom, and repair my garage door. And replace the fixtures in my kitchen sink. And have a new lock installed on my front door. But that’s IT.

We are now living in a rented home after just having sold ours and being a bit in limbo. That said, it does put a damper on home improvement projects! Oh well!
Compliments of our dogs' carpet art – we need to rip up the carpet in our TV loft and put down something hard. Yay.
I have planned that my husband will hang some original artwork that has been framed and ready to go for about 2 years.
The next time my hubby has an auction or big Cragslist extravaganza of all his tile leftovers, I will let you know. He owns a commercial tile company, so when he has surplus-it's really wonderful quality. He gets rid of it very cheap, too!
Dude, the list is so long. You just don't have enough bandwidth.
Believe it or not, I MISS home improvement projects. I owned a house in NY and I did a number on it. Laid new floors (all by myself, except when my dad was up for a weekend and he ran the saw for me). Removed dropped ceilings. Patched plaster walls. Paint. Carpet removal and refinishing stairs. Painting the porch, and all the trim, and the banisters. Changing out light fixtures. It was FUN! Sadly, my apartment complex doesn't want me to upgrade anything. Perhaps I should rent myself out to help everyone else with their projects.
Any takers?
Can I just say how full of wisdom you were in your chat last night?
Lordy lordy, the living room and our bedroom. Can you say, no change in more than 20 years, and the wallpaper is falling off the wall? Can't even think about it now, but I know that when the weather gets warm (20 weeks from now, lol) they'll be top of the list.
Recently painted a bit & have plans to make decorative fabric panels for the living room wall.
