That would be a Very Important Purchase. For my hair. What did you expect?
Tip Of The Day: I swear, I’ll post reader tips sooner than later, and they will be fantastic. However, an innocent trip to my local Walgreens has yielded fantastic finds for your head, and I would be remiss if I didn’t share them with the masses.
Tip For Tomorrow: Reader tips! Of the frugally kind! I promise, they will be worth the wait.
Further Elucidation Of My Cheap Deal: About six months ago, whilst reading my only subscription magazine (Lucky. The magazine, not that I’m lucky to have a subscription. Although in these hard times, I guess I am.), I read about Sally Hershberger’s new line of hair care products. Available at Walgreens, they are nicely priced (for a designer brand) at $15 or less a bottle – and the bottles are full-sized, not those dinky things like Bumble & bumble sells.
Why should we care that Sally Hershberger has a hair care line? Who the heck is she anyways? If you are as obsessed with hair perfection as I, you know exactly who Sally is. She would be the Shag Hair Cut Stylist Of The Gods. Or, at least, of Meg Ryan, amongst other celebrities. One of her amazingly perfect cuts runs about $400, and people with more money than sense book appointments with Miss Sally years in advance.
Luckily, her hair care products are much more reasonably priced and readily available. Her styling aids run about $13 per bottle, shampoos and conditioners are less. How much less? I don’t know – I use Suave in the shower. I’m only willing to shell out more than $2 for styling products, not something I rub on my head and then rinse right out again.
I thought about buying Sally’s stuff (Lucky gave it rave reviews), but other products kept getting in the way. Finally, this week, I was down to a mere 3 hair styling products on my shelf (What? You KNOW my hair is my thing. Don’t judge me.), which meant time to go shopping. And time, at long last, to try Sally’s wares.
I picked up a bottle of her Style Primer for Normal to Thin Hair. Primer is meant to be used by itself as a light-hold styler, or with other products to boost their performance. Since I’m prone to layering 2-3 products on my head, the Primer was right up my alley.
But here’s the Very Important part: right now, as I type, the Walgreens in North Oaks, MN (and, presumably, everywhere else in America) is giving away one FREE bottle of Shagg Spray with every purchase of one Sally styling product. That’s a savings of $13 on hair care, which isn’t chump change my friend.
Shagg Spray can be used on any hair type, and it’s essentially a less sticky, less tacky light-hold spray gel/wax. It’s supposed to add “piece-y texture to layered hair.” As luck has it, I have layered hair… as do most people with hair. And “piece-y texture” also translates to “volumizing when sprayed on the roots of your hair and then blown dry.” Which is how I use it.
I’m happy to report Lucky Magazine and Sally Hershberger did not let me down. The Primer has the right amount of hold to keep the ends of my hair neatly tucked under, and the Shagg Spray gives the right amount of volume to the roots. WARNING: a little of the Spray goes a long way – 2 or 3 squirts are plenty. However, you can layer on the Primer to no end without experiencing product overload.
One last caveat – your hair will be a bit sticky while you blow it dry. Work carefully with your dryer and brush, or you’ll give yourself a few lovely split ends, if not yank out whole strands altogether. All in all, I give Sally’s stylers two thumbs up, with extra bonus squee for the freebie.
I now return you back to the blogosphere.
