Cooper Rocks!
Many fabulous people have helped The Cheap Chick Empire throughout the years, and one of the best and coolest people to give me a hand up is Cooper Lawrence. So I was THRILLED when I saw she had a new book out – The Yoga Club. Dudes, you should all go buy it now and then read it and then say awesome things about it.
Why? Because Cooper is an amazing writer. And? A vastly entertaining person. So it’s worth your time and money. Cooper Lawrence! She is Cheap Chick Approved.

Give Me Down To There Hair, Shoulder Length Or Longer
Here baby, there mama, everywhere daddy, daddy…
Tip Of The Day: It’s that time again. Time for it to be all about my hair. Through my trials and tribulations of finding just the right products for my hair, I’m passing on what I learn to you. So YOU don’t have to try every drugstore brand of hair care product on the planet. Lucky…
Tip For The Weekend: If you’re in Minnesota, or even in its general vicinity, head on over to the Great MN Get-Together – the State Fair. Tickets are $11 for adults, $9 for seniors, $5 (I think) for kids 5-12 (I think), and kids under 5 get in free.
Further Elucidation Of My Cheap Deal: Once again, I’m out and about trying new hair care/styling products. I’ve got two new-to-me stylers to babble about today. Best of all, they’re both under $7 a bottle and available at your local Target.
First up is John Frieda’s Root Awakening Health Boosting Detangling Spray. I got it for $5.99 (I had a $1 off coupon) for 8 fl. oz. Or 177 mL if you’re British. I first head rave reviews about Root Awakening from my buddy, Bionic Beauty. Miss B a. knows way more about beauty products than I ever will and b. has very good, trustworthy opinions. If Bionic Beauty likes something, you know it’s good. Except for those Twilight books – I don’t know what she’s thinking there…
Anyway, back to the Spray. It says it will nourish roots for healthier-looking growth, dramatically silken hair, and protect from heat damage. Here’s what I say:
1. I love the way this stuff smells. Best smelling product in the history of EVER.
2. It keeps my hair fairly soft, although my ends need a stronger product (they usually do).
3. It held my straighten style fairly well, even in humid weather.
4. When used on air-dried ends, it doesn’t get either crunchy or stringy – a HUGE bonus.
5. It made my itchy, dry scalp feel wonderful.
All in all, I like this product. It’s not the strongest or most softening stuff I’ve ever used, but for a basic straight-style day (i.e. for non-auditioning days), I’d definitely use this.
My next product is Pantene Style Curls Spray Gel (a surprisingly short name for a product). Every woman’s magazine in the world raves about low cost, high function Pantene, but I’ve never been real keen on their stuff. I have no idea why, either. Guess it’s just a bias based on over-exposure from the media.
The Gel promises to give you ‘flowing definition and virtually frizz-free bounce.’ Here are my thoughts on the that promise:
1. It smells fairly good, as all Pantene products do.
2. It provides a decent amount of volume and height. No stringy flat curls here.
3. It dries VERY quickly – a bonus for impatient folk like me.
4. When you comb through it, your hair won’t frizz out, and the curls won’t straighten out.
5. However, it does dry very crunchy and doesn’t tighten up my waves into curls, even though it claims to be an extra strong hold product.
6. Overall, it gives me thick waves – not curls. I think I still prefer SunSilk’s Curl Envy Gel – even though it’s no longer sold at Target. Because in that way, Target sucks.
7. This makes an excellent next-day curl/wave reviver. I used it this morning and it bounced my bedhead back into thick waves.
Another AWESOME thing about the Gel – I bought it as a buy-one-get-one package (it came that way from the manufacturer) and on sale at Target for $3.15. That’s two bottles for less than $2 each. Nice!
One last thing before I let you boogie off into the weekend: If you’re at the MN Renaissance Festival on Sunday, stop me on the street (or whatever you call the paths there) and say hi. I’ll be wearing this:
But without the cap. I’m kind of over that cap – it makes me look 12 years old. Anyway, I hope to see you there!
