Ghost In The Machine

Edit:  Once again, my computer and Internet provider conspired against me.  Ergo, yesterday’s post could not be posted, no matter how hard I tried.  Therefore, I’m posting it now, while the ghostie is asleep.  I hope everyone enjoys today Not Really The Hump Day Opinion Poll.

Tip Of The Day:  It’s that time to make it all about you, the dedicated Cheap Chick readers.  Best of all, it’s easy to play along – simply read the Poll questions below and leave your answers (to the questions, or to the meaning of life, both work for me) in the Comments section.  It’s just one more way of showing you I love you BEST.

Tip For Tomorrow:  Tomorrow (Friday) will be my very own Day From Hell.  I’ll be extremely busy, so God only knows what my post will be about.  I’m sure it will be a surprise to us all…

Further Elucidation Of My Cheap Deal:  Today I’m feeling particularly blessed in the whole “My Friends Are Awesome” category.  It would take too long to detail their awesomeness, but sufficive to say?  You guys?  Out there?  Are made of WIN.

Therefore, I’m dedicating today’s Poll to friendship, and to what lengths (in time and money) you will go for your friends.  Because as Bette Midler tells us, ya gotta have friends.

The “Oooo, You’re My Best Friend” Day After The Hump Day Opinion Poll:

1.  Do you have friends that live in another state?  How often can you afford to visit them?  For example, one of my dearest friends is my SIL, who lives in Chicago.  I see her probably every other month, and we split those trips (me to Chicago or her to Mpls) evenly throughout the year.  If I could afford to fly there every other week, I totally would.

2.  For those friends you can’t afford to see very often, how do you stay in touch?  Personally, I am all about the Facebook and email, as they are free (which is best).  Good thing, too, because thanks to the Interwebs, I keep making out of state friends that I can’t afford to visit.  HINT – all of you should move here, to the TC.

3.  Do you exchange birthday/holiday gifts with your friends?  And if so, are you cutting back this year?  My BFF Larue and I have been kicking around the idea that the Posse should only give each other hand-made Christmas gifts this year.  Why?  Because we’re all too broke from costuming to buy each other anything…

4.  Do you give your friends ‘just because’ gifts?  My BFF Lou does this (as does Lou’s mother, so the apple didn’t fall far).  For example, she just sent me the prettiest Feel Better Healing Angel statue – a lovely, carved, rustic-looking, fits-my-décor-and-tastes little thing that I absolutely LOVE.  Why did she gift me with it?  Because I had a cold.  Yeah, I don’t deserve my BFF’s, they are way too good to me.

5.  Do you give to your friends in other ways, like the gift of time or assistance?  Or, my personal favorite, the gift of “I don’t need this anymore/it doesn’t fit/it looks better on you?”  Which is how I’ve furnished my house and my closets – with things that belonged to my friends that they’ve passed on to me.

If I tried to list all the gifts of time, help, encouragement, and support my friends have given me, it would take up all the space on the WWW.  Plus, I’d end up bawling like a big ole baby, which makes my eyes all poufy.  Not cute.

Now it’s your turn – let’s get a little misty and share about our friends.

My sister is my best friend and she lives in Sweden. I really can’t afford to visit her, although I did pay for my adult daughter to visit. My sister still owns her home here, in addition to an apartment in Sweden. She is able to work in Sweden for 3 weeks and fly home for 1 week or so, and we stay in touch with e-mail and phone calls. We stopped exchanging gifts 25 years ago, and instead chose to spend quality time together…just the two of us doing something, or going somewhere special and meaningful. But, we still send cards. No physical gift can ever match the gift of time or assistance!!

I have awesome friends who spent HOURS of their own personal time making the whole Six Wives thing happen. It makes me feel very loved indeed.

I have wonderful friends all over the globe…I wish I had the money to visit them all, and vice-versa, but sadly that’s not happening. We stay in touch on Facebook, Livejournal, email, phone, sometimes snail mail (but less of that lately, online is just so much quicker and free). I mostly exchange gifts with just a few, and usually ones that live nearby. I love just because gifts and would always help a friend out, that’s what friends are for! :-)
