Late Night Munchies

Tip Of The Day:  Three snacktacular junk foods that won’t blow your budget.  They may destroy your diet, however.  Do calories consumed after 11 PM count?

Tip For The Weekend:  Throw a “new twist on the standard” potluck party, like my BFF Lou.  She’s hosting her annual Chili Cook-off Party on Sunday.  The guests bring their best chili offerings, and Lou provides the toppings like cheese, onions, corn chips and BEER.  Okay, beer isn’t a topping, but it does go well with chili.

Further Elucidation Of My Cheap Deal:  Perhaps you’re like me, sitting at home on a Friday night, contemplating the tasty things you could be eating.  Maybe you’ll get your less-fat-than-mine butt of the couch, drive the grocery store and buy something.  Or maybe you’ll be content watching reruns of Family Guy, dreaming about junk food.  However, if you ARE like me, you’ll have already purchased some junk foods and are eating them right this minute.

And perhaps, the junk food you’re enjoying is one of these:

006

Old Dutch Cinnamon Caramel Puffcorn, $2.69 a bag, with a 50 cent instant coupon attached (for a limited time, so get that butt in gear).  If you are fortunate to live where Old Dutch chip products are sold – parts of the US and Canada – then you can get your caramel-corn-lovin’ mitts on a bag of this Puffcorn.  It’s sweet, crunchy, slightly spicy, and really farking addictive.  I’ve already eaten the bag I bought yesterday.  Sigh.

005

Old Dutch Restaurant Style Multigrain Tortilla Chips, $3.99 a bag, usually on sale at either Target or Cub Foods.  In all ways do I strive to get more fiber into my diet.  So it makes me happy to know I can bulk up on bulk fiber whilst noshing on chips and salsa.  Plus, these chips have a light, almost delicate crunch, and a hearty, grainy taste.  I’d even eat them plain – high praise for a corn chip.

004

Archer Farms Five Pepper Picante-Style Salsa, $2.69 at Target.  Confession – I really don’t care for jarred salsa.  But Target doesn’t carry the stuff I like (spicy enchilada sauce in a jar or fresh made salsa from the deli) and I was too lazy to run across the street to Cub Foods.  So I made do with this random jar of salsa and hoped for the best.  Shockingly, SHOCKINGLY I SAY, it’s pretty darn good.  Not too “canned” tasting, a nice amount of spice and zing, and the perfect texture for dunking chips into.  Best part – it’s cheaper than the fresh salsa I normally buy.  See?  Laziness CAN beget frugality.

Well, I’m off to snack and watch The Guild on YouTube.  What are you up to?

What am I up to? Trying to defeat intermittent sleep, and staving off a nasty cold. Yay.

My favorite salsa is a local one, Salsa Lisa (from Cub), the hot formulation. But it’s not as cheap as the Target one, and comes only in a little jar. Grrrr. I use it often, with all kinds of foods. Might try the AF Target stuff. Your puffcorn mention made me remember my dearly-departed grandma, who used to loooove that stuff. :-)

Love the target salsa! I like the one with black beans & corn best. But I am a minnesotan so I can only handle the mild stuff! :P

I am soooo addicted to Puffcorn! I love the original and I can eat half a bag in one sitting. I’ll have to try to the Cinnamon Caramel. I only wish I could find Old Dutch in Chicago. :(

I like to eat Junior Mints. In really large amounts. And now, during the “Holiday Season” (which apparently begins whenever someone decides it does, which can often mean the end of July), there are special Peppermint Crunch Junior Mints 3/$3.00 (the big movie theater sizes) at Walgreen’s. Run, don’t walk, I say!

My Target stores here in the south metro have the fresh salsa in the refrigerated section, (next to the cheese). That’s why you make your own! (I have an easy, killer recipe if you’re interested). I also like Salsa Lisa from Cub. My Cub just started carrying the larger jars and it’s darn good. It’s not cheap, but whoooooofc, sometimes you just need it.
