Closing 2009 Out With A Whimper

And many a large receipt to recount.  Ouch.

Tip Of The Day:  It’s Monday and that means two things in the Cheap Chick Empire.  One, I’m bringing you my Weekly Spending Recap filled with thrills and chills and multiple trips to Target.  Two, strap on your bibs ladies and get read to shovel in some tasty Eye Candy.  Staring at hot men in fat free – and could possibly lower your cholesterol.

Tip For Tomorrow:  I’ve got many plans for the new decade, all of them frugally related, many of which I’d like to relate to you.  I’d also love to smell what you’ve got cooking for the 10’s, so please feel free to share with the group.

Further Elucidation Of My Cheap Deal:  All I can say for 2009 is thank God it’s over.  Bleah, what a craptastic year it was.  And I ended it off nicely with a big ole round of overspending.  Yay me… NOT.  However!  2010 is the Year of Excellent Things, including more and better thriftiness from yours truly.  So onward and upward I say.

Weekly Spending Recap (You know, I don’t really like calling it that.  Can you guys help me come up with a snazzier title?  Thanks):

Monday, December 28

Walgreens in Chicago, meds for the world’s worst headache, $11.64

SuperAmerica, gas for my Ma’s car post road-trip, $13.31

Tuesday, December 29

Target, groceries and the first round of supplies for New Year’s Eve, $33.81

Wednesday, December 30

Exxon, gas for my guzzler, $20.06

Styles on Boone, partial foil and a full hair cut AND a new styling product, $82.04

Thursday, December 31 (Finally, that dread year comes to an end)

Surdyk’s Cheese Shop, best Brie ever, $6.10

Blockbuster Movies, 4 movies for the price of 3, $16.50 (still too spendy, RedBox is a much better deal)

Target, first trip for cute gloves and the rest of my party supplies, $23.02

Target, second trip for cute OKT socks (a Christmas present to myself) and US magazine, $15.25

Friday, January 1 (WOOT!)

AMC Movie Theater, ticket to see Sherlock, $10.00

AMC Movie Theater, dinner of nachos and a soda, $10.50 (GAH!!!!!!)

Maggiano’s, post-movie snacks with my Posse, $17.25 (also, GAH!!!!  Too rich for my blood.)

Saturday, January 2

JCPenney, spending my gift card from Lou’s Mom, $8.99

Holiday Gas Station, extra gas in the guzzler during this cold snap, $28.00

Sunday, January 3

NOTHING.  Haven’t I spent enough?

Total For The Week:  $296.47, aka The Most I’ve Ever Spent In One Week.  Holy Buckets.  Granted, that included New Year’s Eve, a big night out with friends, and my every-other-month hair appointment, but still.  Way too much spending – from now on I’m cutting out Friday night movies (it’s half price at AMC Monday through Thursday) and eating at the theater.  Also, no more shopping for me for a long while – every little bit adds up to too much.

After swallowing that bitter pill, I need to gaze upon something sweet and lovely.  This ought to do the trick:

Viggo Mortenson.  This man just keeps better looking every year.  He’s classic Eye Candy, and a member of my List Of Five – one I will never swap out, get rid of, or trade for a can of Skyline Chili.

So pretty… I’m feeling better about my over-expenditures already.

Yeah, I had to pass on Sherlock because you were going on a Friday. I never, ever get movie theatre food, even IF the nachos are the most amazing thing on the planet.

Yum, love the side of Viggo!
DH and I try to go to the daytime ‘cheap’ movies (if you can call 7.25 a movie cheap) and never, ever, ever buy food there. We usually try to have a big breakfast and then cruise over to the movie so we are not tempted.
My new trick for this year is to keep a total of the cash I spend. I find that my debit card/checkbook expenditures can get under control but I’ll go through some cash in a week and never know what happens to it. So starting today, receipts for everything and then a tally up at the end of each week to see where the money goes.

You can get $5 AMC movie tickets with $15 purchase at Tavern on France, accross the street from AMC Southdale.

    1. You could call the weekly summary Daily Damages, since that is what it feels like when we review our daily expenses.
    2. Skyline Chili??? OMG girl, I was born in Cincinnati, Skyline was my baby food. Got a couple cans in the pantry, wanna come over for dinner?
    3. I am trying oh so hard to curtail spending right now (starting to get the bills for my recent surgery, ouch) so I am buying microwave lunches instead of cafeteria meals at work ($1 instead of $5-7 daily) and trying to use only cash for random purchases (debit/credit only for car things and groceries). We’ll see how long it lasts, but I am trying. Really hard. Gotta be a good Stunt Girl, and walk the walk!

I believe your Weekly Spending Recap should be entitled, “That Which I Blew My Hard Earned Cash On,” or “I Should Just Pay Target a Monthly Stipend” or “Parting Weekly With My Bathtub of Chilled Roosevelt Dimes.”

    Or, you know, something else.

And Yes. $10 is WAY too pricey for a movie. We should go to the dollar theatre instead.
