Quick, name that song! Here’s a hint, it’s sung by Adrian Zmed, and it’s from one of my favorite cheesy 80’s movies. For some reason, I’m on cheesy 80’s kick lately.
I’m also on a grocery store kick, thanks to the lovely folks at Cub Foods and Carmichael Lynch. I was invited to an in-store event today, complete with samples, more samples, happy grocery people, information overload, and a KILLER gift bag. Oh, and best of all? Awesome MN bloggers, many of whom I’m adding to my Links page toot sweet.
Here’s just a soupcon of what I learned today:
1. The Cub Foods in Apple Valley, MN kicks the ass of every other Cub Foods in the history of ever. They have the best butcher shop, a ginormous produce section, and the only bakery that makes homemade, fresh daily tortillas. Seriously, they have this wicked cool tortilla cooker-thing that will entertain you and the kids for HOURS. And at $1.77 a bag (on sale) for fresh tortillas, they are a bargain to boot.
2. Yes, Cub Foods puts all their seafood on sale during Lent. You are not imagining things. Right now, they have great deals on salmon.
3. Their extended butcher shops (check to see if your local Cub has one, like the AV store does) provides FREE MARINADE. That’s right – stop by for some fresh meat, and they’ll pour on the free marinade of your choice. There are approximately 6-7 flavors to choose from, and they even say which marinade pairs well with which meats. Nice.
4. Not only do they have the cost per unit price on their shelf pricing, they include whether or not the product is a nutritional best buy. Look for the green and orange stickers on the shelves for the best nutrition in packaged goods. For example, Special K? No fiber, high sugar, not the diet food it claims to be. You’re better off buying Frosted Mini Wheats.
5. Cub Pharmacy will go to bat for you to get the best priced drugs to fill your prescription. If there is a generic available, they’ll get it for you. If you have two prescriptions that can be combined into one drug, they’ll do it to save you on the cost of two co-pays. And they’ll usually look for the best prices WITHOUT YOU EVEN NEEDING TO ASK. However, I always advocate asking for what you need. Use your words and all that.
6. Minnesota is chock-a-block full of awesome female bloggers. Here are a few I met today – Liz, Darcie, Crystal’s two blogs, the other Liz, and our old friend, Missy. These ladies are full of win.
Edit: I almost forgot! I also met the beautiful and talented Jen from Recovering Procrastinator – and her beautiful and talented baby, as well as Samara (and her adorable daughter) from Simplicity in the Suburbs. My bad!

GREAT recap! I am soo excited to put to use some of the things I learned about today! Great to meet you in person too!

Great meeting you today! Thanks for letting my daughter climb all over your legs!
Glad you also found your keys on the way out
Hey girl, first, great recap. You really paid attention to all the cool things. You didn’t mention that they have like 8,000 discounted items now – until the economy rebounds. Did you see that in your packet?
Also, your links are acting kinda goofy. And should I be offended that you called me old? I can’t decide. I’m only 33.
I will let El Jefe know to stop being such a snob by shopping at Byerly’s and head on over to Cub. Or, you know, he could keep shopping at Target…. (whistles innocently…) You remember Target, right?
Love you! Mean it!
I loooove Cub, almost as much as Target (whistling innocently along with Larue, heh-heh). Seriously, I’ve been going to the AV Cub since they opened. Cool place. I’ve even gotten recipe ideas from Gerard, a manager there. The folks in the meat department are nice too, very helpful. I’m thinking of getting some fish soon, to stock up for Lent, and to try a few new recipes. Thanks for the info!! I didn’t even know some of what ya divulged about this Cub. I have to add, the service desk people are great! I’ve also run into Cub vendors who, when they’ve noticed me, have engaged me in chat, and have offered ideas for recipes, combinations of stuff, whatever. If I had been a visitor, I’d have been impressed enough to make that store my main grocery gig. But I already have.
Sorry, you could tell me Cub was giving away groceries and I’d still probably shop at Target. There is just something about that place, I’m an addict.
Great recap!
Like the others, I am very excited about using some of their tips. I think I may even make the fish tomorrow.
I also need to thank you for letting my son climb all over you.
I too am glad you found your keys(I have done that too many a time).
So great to meet you and great recap of our event! I’ll likely post something eventually and at least I have your info to reflect back on – yay note-taker!
Great to meet you! Nice post. I’m dying to try the tortillas!
Mmmm, love me some frosted mini wheats… but the TARGET version is even better, and costs less… (BTW, they miss you at the TARGET on York)
