As promised, I’m not cranky. Well, at least not for the 40 Days of Lent. However, I am a bit melancholy and my mind is dwelling on things I’ve lost along the way. Mainly, thrifty things I used to love that I don’t have access to anymore. Let us now look back on the frugalness we’ve loved and lost in the Empire:
1. Steve and Barry’s. Remember them? This awesome emporium of clothing and shoes and accessories, all priced at $20 or less, closed its doors to thrifty shoppers last year. And yes, I cried a little bit on the inside. However, I still have my memories, and my cute red peacoat.
2. Isaac Mizrahi for Target. Oh sure, Target has some amazing designers on their docket (Ooo! Ooo! Jean Paul Gaultier is coming to stores near you!), but no one had my love like Isaac. He designed so many wearable pieces, from cute skirts, to flirty dresses, to killer shoes I still dream about. Sigh.
3. 99 cent songs from IPod. Damn you, ITunes, for raising your prices! Greedy little buggers, don’t you have enough of my money already?
Alright, I’ve gotten that all out of my system. Join me now in the purging of lost loves – tell us what frugal goodness you’re missing today. If you leave a comment, you’ll be entered in our prize drawing on March 1st.

I miss the days before everyone discovered thrift stores. I mean, I love it that others now know how cheap it can be to find great clothing that no one else wants, cast off purses, jackets of all kinds – hello Italian leather beauty for only $20.oo!!!- but I remember when jeans were $1.99, and you could get three shirts for $5.00 and then everyone started pouring through the doors and the prices shot through the roof. *sigh* I still go, and love it. Especially when someone goes nuts over something I’m wearing I get to say “Yeah, I got it at the thrift store for like $4.00!” That’s a good thing.
Remember the Boulevard movie theatre? That was my favorite.
Fyi, Isaac Mizrahi now sells stuff on QVC. I haven’t been able to buy anything yet, but the items look very nice. Similar to what he did for Target, in my humble opinion.
What frugal goodness do I miss? The gas coupons at Cub.
iTunes raised their prices? Gah! Is because I was unfaithful and downloaded some music from Amazon last week? I feel so guilty now….
When i lived in TX, we had $1 movie theaters all over the place. Sure the movies has been out for a couple of months by the time I saw them, but I got the theater experience and didn’t have to wait for video to see a flick for cheap. Best of both worlds. We also had a wonderful chain of stores called Puff’s $12 Zoo. Everything was $12 or less. There was also a Puff’s $8 Zoo. Oh, and Smarts! You would have loved Smarts, Eric! It was the Target outlet store. Got my first CD boombox there! Ah, sweet cheapness, those were the days…
Wait, what? Mizrahi is out? I need to leave the house more often.
I miss cheap gas. Also when you could get a 24 pack of diet coke for $5!
I miss cheap gas too…remember 99 cents a gallon???
And, alas, Steve & Barry’s was a downfall of mine. But they live on in thrifty goodness as my now “Whatever” sweatshirt was once their “Ford” sweatshirt that I got for $1 during their going out of business sale.
