So, what’d you guys do this weekend? Me, I went to Duluth – aka one of my favorite places on Earth. In the summer. You won’t catch me dead there once the snow starts to fly.
If you’d like to skibble on north to Lake Superior for a mini-vacation, I recommend staying at Superior Shores in Two Harbors, located 21 miles north of the big D. My peeps and I got an amazing rate – just $100 for a room with a view:

Plus two queen beds, a gas fireplace, a fridge and microwave and a spacious bathroom. We could have gone swimming, too, in the indoor/outdoor pool, but none of us brought our suits. As it was 60 degrees and raining for most of the weekend.
If you stay at Superior Shoes, I also recommend staying at Burlington Bay, like we did:

Lovely, and quiet. And as I mentioned earlier, very affordable. Especially if your BFF’s husband decides to treat you all to a free room, as my BFF’s husband, El Jefe, did. Thank you, El Jefe!
By the by, our room is normally $169, but our intrepid reservation-maker (the aforementioned BFF, Larue), made the reservation on short notice, thus resulting in the super-low price of $100. It pays to switch hotels at the last minute, folks. Or, you can visit Sunday through Thursday, and pay only $119.
If you’re in Two Harbors, you should really eat at Betty’s Pies, like we did:

Their two-piece broasted chicken for $6.99 is crazy-good, and beyond filling. I had no room left over for pie – sadness! – but my travel compatriots made short work of the 5-layer chocolate pie. A worthy dessert for the cheap-relative-to-TC-dessert-prices at $3.99 a slice.
What should you do in Duluth? Well, there is the Marathon (next weekend, folks!), there is Twig (the reason why I was there, but you’ll have to wait until 2011 for the next Faire), and then there is the main reason to go anywhere – SHOPPING. I highly recommend the Ragstock in downtown, and the import store next door to it. Larue likes the antique shops, but I feel they are a bit over-priced. Plus, you can stroll along the shores of Lake Superior, the biggest and the best of all the Great Lakes, in my opinion.
If you drive up to Duluth from the TC, be sure to do like EVERYONE ELSE ON THE PLANET DOES, and stop at Tobie’s. Their restaurant is fine, the service is mediocre, but the bakery? To DIE for. I got these beauties (they come 6 to a bag, but I got hungry before I took the picture):

Homemade, low fat, low calorie English muffins. Or, as the British call them, muffins. They are a guilt-free treat, both for your wallet –a mere $3.89 a bag – and for your waist – a mere 160 calories per muffin. I plan to be a good daughter and give some to my Ma. If I don’t eat them all first…
Now I want to hear from you – where are you going this summer? And will it be budget-friendly, or a big blow-out?

What?? No title to write random book covers? I am so sad.
Glad you had fun on the trip. I think the antique stores are good on some things and not on others. It depends purely on the person whose booth it is. And how realistic they are in pricing.
What, no picture of you as a pirate?
Hello cheap chick, I love superior shores but I think that you are short changing Duluth in the winter. I was married in Feb. and we honeymooned at superior shores. It was gorgeous. We did most of the things you talked about; Bettys pies, Toby’s bread for breakfast, ect…. But we didn’t have to share the area with so many tourists. Also… Cheaper rates. I love the north shore.
Beautiful…I went to Duluth-Superior for vacation 7 years ago and loved it! Everything was perfect, except for the fact that on one of our day trips to the woods, I got lost in the woods, that was a little scary…
