Every so often, someone will ask me what it is that I am wearing on the Fox 9 Morning Buzz. And where I purchased what I’m wearing. And how much I spent on what I’m wearing. (Occasionally, someone will comment, usually negatively, about my hair. But I ignore those bastards people.)
As a public face of frugal living, I do try to keep my on-air outfits on the thrifty side. For example, last week I wore a pair of Capri pants from Penney’s I bought last year for around $18. They’re the St. John’s Bay line – which can be old-lady-ish. But these pants are more retro-fabulous than shuffle-board on the lido deck. If you’d like a pair (I own 3 pairs, myself) I believe they are still available, and often go on sale. The plaid, sparkly camp shirt by BCBG was FREE – a hand-me-down from my StepMom.
I also wear a lot of leggings and boots outfits. Leggings won’t bunch up oddly when you’re sitting on those low-to-the-ground couches and chairs we have on set. I’ve bought leggings on sale at Penney’s in the Junior Department (go up a size!), and at Express (go down a size!). The Express leggings are more spendy, unless you buy them on sale. Then they’re around $20. However, they’re super-thick, long, and have a flattering waistband – i.e. worth the money.
My favorite boots are from Target, and cost $35. However, they are no longer available. May I recommend these as another, gorgeous, option?

$49.99 and they’re real leather. WANT.
I top my leggings with a variety of tunic tops, usually in a solid color. Why? Because patterns, especially small, busy, high-contrast patterns film horribly and make the wearer look awful. If you’re going to wear a pattern on air, stick to a large one, like this dress I wore a few months ago:

$25 on sale at the Dillards dress department in Omaha. Once again, WHY DON’T WE HAVE A DILLARDS IN THE TC? WHY???
Ehem. Back to the tunic tops. I’ve found cute, inexpensive ones on the clearance rack at Kohls (usually between $15 and $20), or at thrift stores, like this one from Saver’s ($7):
…and then there’s this one, which I plan to wear on air tomorrow. It’s my famous, first-online-swap-item. I plan to tone down the crazy pattern with a shear, black cardigan – from Forever 21, purchased forever ago.
My main criteria for tunic tops are that they flow over my booty and hips, without making me look pregnant, and have an interesting neckline. Here’s another on-air tip? Make sure your neckline looks pretty, (and not too busty) as that’s what is primarily shown on camera. I also wear hoop earrings, to add a bit of sparkle to my face, without overwhelming my head. NEVER OVERWHELM YOUR HEAD, PEOPLE.
So there you have it, and idea of what works for me on air, and what can work for you, the next time you’re faced with a televised appearance. One last tip? Smile, and look at the camera with the red light on top. That’s the one recording you.

I totally agree about Target’s footwear (at least, some of it). I’ve not bought many Target shoes or boots, having been burned by a few pairs in the past. However, I recently got a fantabulous pair of Mossimo ankle boot heels (whatever) for $5 at Saver’s. They’re THE most comfortable pair of shoes I own, aside from my tennis shoes. Who’d a thunk it? I wore them all day before, during, and after a Twins game, and never flinched. They’ve become my go-to footwear for job interviews, too. If I ever find myself on the tube, I’ll be ready!!
And as for the detractors to your appearance? Just keep on keepin’ on, chickie!
You do a great job!
