What To Buy Now, Part Two, Third Quarter

Retailers across the globe have an ultra-secret, highly sneaky schedule of when they put their stock on sale.  Okay, it’s not THAT secret – you can readily find the information on Google, with a judicious amount of digging.  But who wants to bother with all that work?  Instead, I’ve done the investigation for you, as I am generous to a fault.  Read on for the top secret deets.

Top Tip:  The best time to buy anything is either a. when new products are being rolled out, to take advantage of clearance sales of last year’s models.  Or b. when the seasons change and the previous season’s items are cleared out to make room for the new.

What To Buy In July:

If you’re in New York City, July is the best time to see a Broadway show.  New Yorkers tend to rush to see the fall season, and by summer, the shows are passé.   Therefore, theaters offer reduced rates to get tourists in the door.

Computer models get switched out for newer models about twice a year, January and July.  A few weeks before retailers receive new merchandise, they start marking down the older models.  August is good too, for those back to school sales.

New furniture hits the showrooms in August.  Therefore, in July stores have clearance sales to make room for that fresh inventory.

Stock up now on spring fabrics.  Jo Ann Fabrics and her ilk are clearing out spring and summer prints and putting out the fall and CHRISTMAS items already.  Sheesh.

What To Buy In August:

Shop for dehumidifiers, even though it’s still humid out.  Why?  Because technically August is toward the end of the season, and retailers’ minds are turning to furnaces.

Retailers start offering discounts on their been-in-the-stores-since-February stock of outdoor furniture.  September is another good month to save, as stores start making room for Christmas supplies.  Seriously.

Bathing suits, summer clothes and shoes go on uber-sale in late July and early August, as stores are clearing out summer wear to make room for new fall items.  Even though it’s still summer.  Yeah.

Swing sets, now that the kids are gearing up to go back to school.  Sets are large and take up a too much show space, so stores need to rid themselves of this bulk.  To make room for Christmas, don’t you know.

What To Buy In September:

School supplies – stores need to clear out what’s left over now that school has started.  Also, shop in late July, to take advantage of back to school sales.

Lawn mowers and grills, as hardware stores start to switch over to winter gear, like snow blowers.  UGH.

Plants, flowers, trees, shrubs and bulbs, as prices drop after midsummer when stores clear out inventory.  No, I’m not suggesting you buy annuals, just items that can survive a winter in MN.

New models of major appliance models like refrigerators, stoves, washers, and dryers hit showroom floors in October, allowing customers to buy last year’s model in September at a discount.

New automobile models begin appearing at dealerships in the fall, making September the best time to purchase the previous year’s model at a discount. By the end of the year, inventory runs out, so if you shop early you’ll have the best selection.

Alrighty then, denizens of the Empire – what do YOU plan to buy this quarter?

Just bought a new laptop computer for home. And ‘recycled’ my old one by giving it to the hubster so he can donate his old desk top.
