Happy Hour Deals 2013

REMINDER:  Drinking and driving is neither frugal nor fabulous, and is NOT condoned by The Cheap Chick.  Or anyone else, for that matter.

Although we would like every hour of the day to be happy, some happy hours are happier than others.  Here’s my guide to finding the happiest hours near your place of work and beyond.

Search Criteria:

1.  Find a “hidden gem” – these bars and restaurants don’t show up on every Twin Cities magazine’s “best of” list.  I use sites like Thrifty Hipster.com, Urban Spoon.com, and Daily Happy Hour.com  to find places beyond your typical downtown Minneapolis watering holes.

2.  Use user-friendly websites – you want to know what you’re getting for your happy hour before you hit the bar.  The places I chose all post their happy hour specials on their websites.

TIP FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES:  Put your happy hour discounts and menues on your website.  Many great places didn’t make my list, because I could neither confirm nor deny what they offered for happy hour.

3.  Look for something special – these places offer more hours to be happy, more deals to make you happy, or more reasons to be happy during happy hour.  So don’t settle for the same old same old!

The Blue Door Pub on 1811 Selby Avenue in St. Paul.  They offer $2 pints, $2 baskets of fries and tater tots, and all wines are $5 a glass from 2 PM to 5 PM.  Best of all, today, January 29th at 5 PM, they are opening the doors to their newest location in Minneapolis.  Now you can be happy every day on both sides of the river.  Check out the new Pub at 35th Street and 42nd Avenue.  And if you need more convincing, The Blue Door Pub a 91% positive rating on UrbanSpoon.

Parkway Pizza in Minneapolis.  While you’re on 42nd Avenue, head south to 44th Street for pizza and different happy hour drink specials every day of the week.  For example, on Tuesdays Parkway offers wine by the glass for $2.50 from 5 to 10 PM, and 2 for 1 tap beers from 8 to 10:30 PM.  But Parkway’s real draw is their Dine-Out for Schools Nights.  Four times a month, they donate 5% of their revenue to local schools and MPS Early Childhood Family Education.  For example, on the first Tuesday of every month, Parkway Pizza donates to Hale Elementary – which I love, as 2 of my godchildren go to Hale.

Now for two happy hours with really LONG hours and really great deals:

Amore Victoria on 1601 West Lake Street in Minneapolis.  They offer drink specials and discounts on appetizers – all under $6 each – from 2 PM to 7 PM, Monday through Thursday.  That’s 20 hours of happiness a week.  Plus, Amore has a rooftop bar for when it eventually warms up.

Last, but not least, is Schroeder’s Bar and Grill on 605 Front Avenue in St. Paul.  They run their happy hour from 3 PM to 7 PM every day, resulting in 28 happy hours every week.  And you’ll be happy with $1 off all beers, wines and liquor, $2 off all full appetizers, and $2 off all pitchers.  Plus, they run 2 all-day specials – $2 select tap beers and $7 select pitchers.

Now, go forth and get happy.  Responsible, of course :)

I like Amazing Thailand in Mpls. Great food and drinks, we always seem to hit happy hour (eating early with the kiddos), giant portions making one meal three. Also, I ate there on my birthday and they gave me free dessert, a magnet calendar, and a GC for $10 off my next meal there. Pretty cool.

    Where I Thrift

Everyone has their favorite thrift stores, right?  Okay, you do if you love thrifting as much as I do!  Here are the stores where I enjoy popping tags:

Saver’s in Bloomington – close proximity to Prestigious West Bloomington and Edina equals excellent, higher end thrift scores.  Remember, if you donate?  You receive a 20% off coupon you can use right away!

Saver’s in Columbia Heights – it’s the nearest thrift store to my house, and they have the NICEST staff of any Saver’s in the TC, in my humble opinion.

ARC Value Village – For me, ARC is hit or miss.  I either score BIG, or leave empty-handed.  Either way, I always enjoy perusing this tidy, friendly shop.
